A Brief History of Lent

Lent has a fascinating history in the Catholic Church. The history of Lent as a 40 day period of fasting in preparation for Easter can be traced back to the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. In addition, the Order of the Catechumenate and the Order of Penitents had a significant impact on the development of the season of Lent that was restored by Vatican II.
